There is a wonderful Stillwater fishery on the way to Banff located on the Old Coach Road called Hector Lake that provides a special opportunity to fish for very large rainbows. This fishery is located on the Morley Indian reservation west of Calgary it is sometimes susceptible to winterkill. Therefore, phone ahead and we will surely clarify if the fish over wintered and are of a good size in decent numbers. This body of water is a pay for fee fishery that costs the angler $20.00 dollars a day (CDN) and is catch and release. As well, there is a lodge (Nakoda Lodge) located on the lake, which is open to the public for a nominal fee. This is a shallow lake with white marl shorelines and light sand shoals in a variety of areas that allows the angler to hunt large trout individually, it is a truly wonderful visual experience. It is a small lake and is situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountains the scenery is beautiful and the fishing can be astonishing.

The Chironomid fishing can be exceptional, there is Callibaetis Mayfly Hatches as well, and there is several species of traveling sedges present. There is also flying ant activity that creates a situation where unbelievable numbers of adult ants become trapped in the lake surface. The surface gulping that takes place during the flying ant activity by large trout sometimes up to 8-10 pounds is breathtaking. The gorging that takes place on the surface by large trout during the flying ant activity has to be experienced first hand to be truly appreciated. The Damsel fly hatches are good and the rainbows feed on both the nymphs and adults very heavily. We have even seen these big rainbows suck down adult dragonflies when they become trapped in the surface film. These big trout love feeding on the surface when the opportunity presents itself. Therefore, if Stillwater fishing of this quality is your interest let us know and we would be happy to provide this service for you. These rainbows on this lake are big, beautiful extremely strong fish that will take you right through your backing on a good day if your not willing to chase them. Please contact us for booking times and rates for Hector Lake.
