The most intense aquatic insect hatches in this area occur during the spring to fall months from April-October. The first eagerly anticipated hatches usually start appearing as water temperatures approach that magical 54º F \ 12º C. The aquatic food rich environments the rivers and lakes provide in this region produce heavy hatches and large rising fish.

The match the hatch type dry fly fishing in this area provides great opportunities and exciting situations to fish dry flies to large trout visibly feeding on the surface. The large populations of aquatic earthworms, crane fly larva and large stonefly nymphs keep trout feeding steadily along the stream bottom. This provides a lot of midday fun between hatches and a chance at a large trout on nymphs especially on the Bow River.

Leeches, Dace, Sculpins, Sucker Minnows, Baby Whitefish and juvenile Trout offer big browns and large bull trout the full meal deal. This steady menu of forage food provides the dedicated streamer fisherman an exciting opportunity to catch some very large trout.

Midges/Chironomids

This area contains various species of midges from the huge jumbo lake chironomids to the tiniest micro midges on streams. The various midges/chironomids are available for the trout to feed on in a broad spectrum of color ranges in a wide range of sizes. The colors range from black, brown-maroon, bright granny apple green to gray, olive to even cream and this only covers the most prominent hatches. Some species can range in dimension from a large size 8 in the larval/pupal stage while other species can range down to a micro size 28 in the adult stage.

There is wonderful chironomid fishing in lakes to nice trout with indicators and pupa patterns fished at various depths. As well as circumstances where the situation calls for the tiny midge emergers, cripples and adults to be fished on slow clear streams. On a few of our still waters, there is the extraordinary prospect of fishing emerging and crippled chironomids to surface rising trout of decent proportions.

Terrestrials

  • Grasshoppers
  • Beetles
  • Ants
