The
staff in our fly shop strive to fulfill the needs of every level of
fly fishermen from the individual that is new to the sport to the
very serious angler. We are as comfortable dealing with the consummate
angler when discussing a match the hatch situation as we are in assisting
with the selection of quality fly tying materials for the serious
fly tier. We specialize in assisting frustrated anglers that are new
to the sport to better understand the subtleties of equipment selection.
The variety of fly fishing schools we offer are informative, fun and intentionally limited to only a few participants in each program. This approach allows our instructors a more efficient transference of knowledge, plenty of in-depth information and hands-on instruction. It also provides students lots of personal attention and hands on experience during school learning sessions. Where specific casting skills are put into practice during practical exercises with lots of time to develop technique and muscle memory in a relaxed unhurried personal environment. This
systematic personal approach is the favorite style of program for
many of our customers as well as our staff, because this arrangement
usually involves fewer participants. It allows the individual to learn
at their own pace and the instructor to deliver a lot more personal
attention and hands on guidance for the individual student. This system
is a reciprocal arrangement that benefits the individual taking the
program and the instructor delivering the information. In this environment
the student gets the most benefit out of the school and the instructor
has the opportunity to present the program in the most beneficial
manner. The instructor in a fly fishing school focuses on developing the participant’s physical muscle memory and the mechanics behind proper casting technique, line control and line handling skills. They also spend constructive time teaching fly fishing terminology, general angling knowledge as well as knot tying skills, entomology and proper fly selection. These schools are designed on the premise that the instructor has a full day to focus on instruction, content and comprehensive coverage. Without having the added responsibility of concentrating on ensuring the participant actually fishes and catches some trout. While
a fly fishing guides center of attention is ensuring the anglers they
take out are comfortable, catch fish, have a nice meal, learn a few
new skills and enjoy themselves. The guide’s day is quite hectic
and is composed of a variety of different tasks besides merely instructing.
The guide’s daily duties include rowing and proper placement
of the drift boat, preparing a delicious meal and generally providing
for the client’s well being and level of enjoyment. The guide
replaces leaders and flies when required, provides supportive direction
with basic casting skills and proper presentation techniques. Situations also arise where clients may have never fished before or have physical injuries that limit mobility and usually require assistance when wading rivers. Customers with medical concerns require the need for additional comfort and attention to detail. These situations usually require that a guide provide patience; coaching or even medical aid. The guide also supportively assists clientele on proper technique when fighting and landing significant fish on light equipment and terminal tackle which is no easy chore. A good guide will try being as supportive and helpful as they can during your float trip however time constraints usually allow only fundamental instruction. If too much time is spent on comprehensive teaching it really cuts into the overall pleasant flow of the day and fishing time. Most clientele that have booked a guided float trip have expectations of having plenty of fishing time and would prefer to focus on catching fish. Hopefully
the last few paragraphs help to clarify why an angler that has just
taken up fly fishing should take some sort of fly fishing school before
going on a guided trip. Even the largest most selective trout
will eat your fly if it meets a few simple prerequisites. Many
of the participants in our fly fishing schools are composed of a father
and son combination, husband
and wife coupling or even two or three fishing friends as a group.
This type of program is much more valuable initially to the beginner
as an educational tool than a guided trip. The
physical requirements to become an accomplished caster as well as
developing the motor skills to maintain long drag free floats cannot
be passed on in an hour or a day. The
ability to get comfortable with these two skills can only be developed
through plenty of practice upon completion of comprehensive instruction.
These fly fishing schools we offer are designed to be of the greatest
assistance and fit the participant’s agenda for convenience.
Any customer can sign up for one of our fly fishing schools by phone,
fax or e-mail and book a school for a time that fits their schedule.
