On a personal level this place affected me like no other place I have been. I get the feeling that fly-fishing runs through the very soul of this community. My brother and friends kibitzed back and forth to each other over how they thought I was feeling like this was a bit of a lifelong pilgrimage. To locate that elusive location where life’s very essence is comprised of a world where fly-fishing is the very centre of a happy existence. I thought that if ever an angler could find paradise this must be it. Everywhere you looked, the focus was fly-fishing. This sentiment appeared in the newspapers and magazines, as well as in the art galleries and business offices. Walls and ceilings everywhere were adorned with photographs, paintings and fly-fishing paraphernalia was in every fly shop, lodge and gas station/convenience store to community centres and even restaurants. I considered how fortunate these people were to reside in such a special place and wondered whether living there would encourage complacency and therefore take what is there for granted. What frequently haunts me is that when I return to Island Park and West Yellowstone during the heart of the fishing season and the time comes to depart back to Canada, a part of me will always remain in the Island Park area. The Harrop’s, Lawson’s, Andre Puyans, Rich Paini, Jon Stiehl and the Hyde family have all made tremendous efforts in making this area a quality experience. This truly is a place where avid anglers can come and enjoy the wonderfully natural settings and angling challenges this area provides.
While in Island Park we stayed at the Hyde (Last Chance Lodge), which is a beautiful rustic building that is very comfortable. It has a fly shop right in the lodge, which is handy, and the lodge is located right in the middle of the community of Island Park close to all amenities. If this area captures your interest, the Hyde (Last Chance Lodge) is a great place to stay. The phone number to the lodge is (1–208–529–4343).
Henry’s Fork Anglers Inc. Fly Fishing Outfitters is a must see stop if you are ever down in the Island Park area. Mike Lawson operates the shop and is a knowledgeable, positive and helpful individual that is very pleasant to deal with. The shop building is beautiful, and as with the man himself that operates the business, it is exceptional. To contact the shop and make inquiries by phone call (1-208-558-7525).
The Trout Hunter operation in Island Park is situated right on the banks of the Henry’s Fork River. The operation runs out of one building combining guide services, a fly shop, lodge, bar &grill into one convenient location. The shop carries a wide array of flies, angling apparel, and fly-fishing equipment the company is partly owned by the Harrop’s. Two other names that are associated with the shop are Rich Paini as well as Jon Stiehl. A real attraction at the shop for us was that it carried House of Harrop flies, tying materials and art by Rene Harrop. The Harrop family consisting of Rene, Bonnie, Shane and Leslie have built the family name into an operation known for their superior quality in both their flies and tying materials. Jon Stiehl is a permanent fixture in the shop and his personality as well as patience provides an atmosphere that makes the shop a very comfortable place to deal with and do business. To contact the Trout Hunter Fly Shop/Lodge call (1-208-558-9900).
